    What It's About

“Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it is getting.” This Dr. W. Edwards Deming quote perfectly describes today’s dilemma in home design. 250 lean building implementations with 200+ builders and 35,000 improvement ideas submitted by 6000 suppliers/trades all point to a similar conclusion – flaws, waste and cost inefficiencies are often rooted in the design process itself. The good news: this is well upstream from construction which makes these issues preventable! This session explores why these design flaws occur and offers solutions for producing plans that are both cool and cost-effective. Through compelling before-and-after visuals, we'll highlight visual and structural improvements that reduce cycle time, labor and materials, ultimately resulting in better homes, higher margins and happier customers.

    What You’ll Learn

    • Learn how to incorporate lean thinking and process into design and engineering, going the next level beyond value engineering.
    • Understand who must be involved in the process of great and efficient design and their roles, including "voice of the customer" (and why you'll want to challenge engineers and architects).
    • Identify the impacts of the three primary categories of design failure -- Technical, Value, and Execution -- and how to overcome them.
    • Explore the specific steps, from initial concept to fully detailed construction drawings, that create a great home at a lower price, with profit for builder, suppliers and trades alike.

    How to Attend

Participants must be registered for an Expo + Education pass. Seating for sessions will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
