Properly assessing a renter's request to have an animal as a "reasonable accommodation" under the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) is critically important in today's multifamily market. Failure to understand the rules and regulations around service animals can land property owners in hot water with the federal government. Led my NAHB legal staff, this program will provide a brief overview of the relevant case law, highlight examples taken directly from the headlines and lay-out a set of best practices for complying with the FHA when faced with a disability accommodation request to an established "No Pets" policy.
