SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I think for me it’s twofold: getting to improve, design, and create impactful spaces for our clients and learning and improving the residential construction industry. Connecting with other builders and industry partners and learning about how to improve makes us all better and improves the industry. I think also developing connections with our team and community is very rewarding as well.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I’d like to understand what others are doing in regards to employee retention, training, and adding structure to the residential construction world.

Myer Hill Consulting
Structural Designer

Area: Engineering

Elizabeth Boone is the first and only employee at Myer Hill Consulting, an engineering consulting firm based in Lancaster PA. Her father started the business several years ago. Elizabeth joined the company after college and a hiatus as a farmer.

As a structural designer, Elizabeth is responsible for designing and drafting rough outlines for every project that comes to the company. This initial phase includes gathering information from the client regarding their needs, researching code to assume proper design standards, brainstorming a framing layout, designing critical members and sketching plans in AutoCAD. She works closely with the engineer and owner to take the project from a draft to final sealed drawings.

The company provides structural solutions for clients in multiple states in projects that vary in scope, materials and usage. Whether problem-solving a singular area in a small residential project or designing and drafting full structural drawings for commercial buildings, Elizabeth plays a critical role on the team.

Elizabeth is pursuing her civil engineering degree online at the University of North Dakota. This degree and future licensure will be an asset to the company as they continually grow and expand their portfolio of clients and projects.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

At a consulting firm, we typically get involved when problems arise and it’s inspiring to see everyone working together to get it solved. We brainstorm in the office, analyze options, bounce them off the client to assess their feasibility and go around in that cycle until that problem is solved. The problem-solving process we go through keeps inspiring me to solve more problems every day!

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I am not well connected in the industry and have limited knowledge to construction methods. I hope to begin my career networking on this trip and to learn more about the industry because engineering can be very “heady” and neglect the physical feasibility of what we design. It’s important to know more about the buildings I am designing and meet those people who can teach me about that.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT'S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Working with our students day to day and having a front row seat to watch them grow in their technical skills and as people. There’s nothing more exciting for me then when an alumni has something positive happen in their life like getting a new job, completing a big project, getting married, and more and I’m someone they want to contact and tell the good news to.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

As a career teacher, I feel like I have so much to learn now coming into the home building side of things in order to best help my students. I look forward to attending the premiere.

Jessica Casebolt
Jessica Casebolt
Age: 30

Oddball Creative Agency
Director of Operations

Area: General Contracting

Jessica Casebolt is the Director of Operations at Oddball Creative, a website design and marketing agency in Owensboro KY. Their career started as a spokesperson for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Kentucky Proud program, followed by internships for the American Heart Association and the Federal Reserve Bank, St. Louis.

They also brought historic new membership numbers in their role at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce before moving over to the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce membership division.

After relocating to Owensboro KY, Jessica began work as a Community Engagement Specialist for Thrivent Financial. At the height of the COVID pandemic, the corporate consolidation of Thrivent ultimately provided the opportunity to join the local start-up company Oddball Creative. Jessica supports businesses and nonprofits in their marketing, advertising and digital strategies so they grow, thrive and achieve their goals.

Through strategic efficiency and management interventions, they course-corrected a history of financial losses to profitable solvency and established a unique market and value proposition for Oddball.

Jessica actively volunteers and contributes to the Homebuilders Association of Owensboro. They hold International Economics and Globalization and International Affairs degrees from Eastern Kentucky University.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT'S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

At Oddball, we work predominantly with small to medium sized businesses. Our clients are, in so many ways, the lifeblood of their communities. From employment opportunities, to the unique products and services they offer, to sponsoring little league teams and highway cleanups, they're crucial to the fabric of our lives.

This technological age has created significant challenges for these businesses. When Prime shipping, YouTube DIY tutorials, and similar alternatives are ubiquitous, it can be overwhelming to approach online spaces let alone try to compete in them.

That's where we come in! It's inspiring and exceptionally fulfilling to bring our skills and expertise in web design and development, branding and graphic design, marketing and advertising strategy, and digital advertising to our clients so that these challenges become opportunities, and eventually even strengths.

Everyone loves an underdog story, but leveling the playing field for our clients, I believe, is enormously consequential and meaningful for the thousands of employees, customers, community organizations, and even to the reinvestment of tax revenue state and local governments can utilize to continue to build and strengthen our communities.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I intend to approach this experience with as much openness and eagerness as possible. I know I have a tremendous amount to learn about the industry, the innovation and problem solving happening, the unique needs and challenges facing NAHB members. I know I run the risk of information overload, but I am looking forward to challenging myself and my current understanding by diving into IBS head first!

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

I have been blessed with several great mentors, friends, and a very supportive family, and the wisdom they've shared with me is foundational to who I am. I am endlessly thankful. Highlighting the best piece of advice I've been given, though, means going to a special rest point on my favorite hiking trail. It's a small corner of the world with towering trees and loads of sunlight. It feels like it exists outside the bounds of time. It is so peaceful and a picture of rest and simplicity. It whispers its advice to me:  to remember that each unique moment is temporary and precious, every living thing is valuable, and as much as we try to build all these structures and systems to keep us safe or facilitate our own advancement, it's so important to step away into this essential goodness.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

I think I've got to hold some kind of record for audiobook time. (2022 was my record year; between hardcopy and audiobooks, I read 125 books! It looks like 2023 is tracking toward those same numbers again!) There's plenty of fiction in there, but I really burn through a lot of history, science and technology, psychology, and political content. I make sure to sprinkle in some classics, too.

When I can pull myself away from books, I'm always trying to get to a good concert (most recently I've been able to see Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, and George Clinton! Mind blowing.) I'm a big fan of craft beer (Belgians and sours topping that list), and my pup (Addy) and three little brother cats (Kevin, Jack, and Bart) are wonderfully chaotic and precious.

FAVORITE SHOW OR MOVIE?

Little Miss Sunshine. A dysfunctional family supports Olive, a quirky and super lovable kid, in her dream to compete in the finals of a beauty pageant. I love this movie for how unexpected and funny it is all along the way, but it's also a really interesting satiric commentary on beauty standards, family values, and our conception of and expectations around success.

FAVORITE PODCAST OR BOOK?

This is an impossible question. Ok, if I have to pick one, the book that really made an impact on me lately (which I'm using as a proxy metric for 'favorite') is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Most people recognize Andy Weir from The Martian (which was adapted into a movie with Matt Damon), but Project Hail Mary is a science fiction novel that follows a former molecular biologist and researcher turned middle school teacher who finds himself at the center of the global effort to reverse an extension-level threat coming 12 light-years from Earth. Andy Weir builds worlds and characters like no one else.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

The most inspiring part of my job is creating strong relationships with homebuilders across the country and being a part of giving people the ability to purchase their dream home.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I would love to get a deeper understanding of the homebuilding industry from ALL perspectives, not just from the lending aspect. I am only 2.5 years into this industry, so I have a lot to learn but IBS will be the perfect opportunity for me to absorb it all like a sponge and use the knowledge I gain for the future.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” - Benjamin Mee, We Bought a Zoo

This quote has gotten me through so many moments where I was on the cusp of experiencing something great but didn’t realize it because it was hidden behind fear/risk. However, every time I took the 20 seconds to be brave, it worked in God’s plan for me 100% of the time in the best ways!

WHAT DO YOU EnJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

I love anything and everything travel and tourism! I have been to 38 countries and 4 continents so far with a goal of hitting all 7 continents. Although I love to hop on a plane and explore somewhere new, I have learned to really enjoy the state I live in and explore it as much as I can.

Growing up in an arts family where my parents encouraged us to pursue our passions, they regularly repeated the quote to my brothers and me “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

When I am town, I can often be found hanging out with my dog at home or around town trying new restaurants. But what I truly enjoy the most is traveling and exploring new cities. I have a scratch off map and I’m always looking for where to plan my next adventure.

FAVORITE SHOW OR MOVIE?

Pinpointing a favorite is tough, but the last movies I saw in theatres were Creed III and the Barbie movie. Two very different genres but both were incredible cinematic productions, and as a bonus the reason I saw Creed was because my older brother was a designer on the movie.

FAVORITE PODCAST OR BOOK?

I often listen true crime or watch way too many documentaries but I have also recently gotten back into reading where I enjoy a good James Patterson thriller or any mystery novel.

D.R. Horton, Inc.
Superintendent

Area: General Contracting, Green Building

Nick Scaranda was born in California, moved to Colorado as a kid and moved to Denver when he flew the coop of his mom's home. It was the beginning of Nick's industry journey.

When he first moved to Denver with his to-be wife and daughter, he was an industrial hygienist monitoring asbestos in the soils of Stapleton Airport in 2009. Then, after a career change into new home construction, Nick started building homes as an assistant superintendent for a home builder Boulder Creek Neighborhoods.

Nick found himself on top of the exact same dirt he drove and stood on while monitoring soils. He was part of the largest infill project in the U.S. at the time, pre- and post-construction, handing over new homes to buyers in 2018.

Seeing this development unfold in front of him and underneath his feet was a great reminder of his impact on this earth. He's proud to help alleviate the U.S. housing shortage as a superintendent building new homes in the Denver Metro area.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Getting to be a part of our customers journey in the building process and helping their ideas become reality. The relationships we build mean so much! We are often creating something together that will be a part of their lives forever and it is super rewarding seeing their final projects and how in love they are with their new space!

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I am looking forward to exploring the new products and trends of our industry. Sometimes it feels as though being in the Midwest we are a bit slower to catch on to what is going on the coasts, and I believe I can bring back a lot of knowledge to our area. In addition to what is new in the building world, I am looking forward to networking with peers and learning ways to improve as a young leader in the industry, not only myself, but for our customers, business, and for future generations.

Ivey Residential LLC.
Purchasing Assistant Manager

Area: General Contracting, Multifamily Building

Ty Whitman is the purchasing/estimating assistant manager for Ivey Residential, a single family attached and detached homes and rental development builder. Working in construction purchasing and estimating has been a great learning experience for Ty for the last few years.

His senior project gave him a start in construction during high school. The topic was energy efficiency in residential construction, which he thought was neat because he could build a model home to create his final product. Ty had no idea this project would lead to working with the same builder years later.

His local HBA, Home Builders of the Greater Aiken Augusta Region, recently merged two local HBAs (Aiken SC and Augusta GA). Since the merger the HBA started a new education committee. Ty organizes the HBA ‘Lunch and Learn’ events. These events are for any construction professional, but mainly builders, and consist of two parts: a class led by a local vendor sales representative and a builder roundtable/Q&A with the vendor.
