SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I'm inspired by my vision of the future. I envision myself building entire communities and creating spaces that challenge innovation and technology. I want to build structures that stand for hundreds of years, something people will marvel at for centuries. Also, memories are powerful. They shape us. I am building memories with my family and creating spaces that others can use to build their memories. That's inspiring to me.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I know one of the challenges I will face is maximizing my time and making sure I get as much information as possible. I am hoping I can be intentional and learn the right things I need to in order to bring information back to our business that will actually enhance it. I want to absorb it all, but need to remain focused on what we need to learn for our business and for what I am trying to accomplish in my career individually.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”

- Suzy Kassem

I think this correlates with fear. Fear of failure. That is a thought I try to never entertain. I try to think about this quote often so I can carry myself with courage, confidence and kindness each day despite any obstacle that comes my way.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

I have a slip at the Mud Island Marina in Memphis and love to take my 16-foot sea excursion kayak out on the Mississippi River. There are so many places in this world that man has not paved a road to, waiting to be explored if you have the courage to go…...EVERYONE calls me crazy because it can be very dangerous, but I went through safety training, make sure to stay physically strong and always use caution. It is empowering to solo paddle on a river that has played such an integral role in building our country. It challenges me mentally and physically, and I am addicted to its rolling waters.

FAVORITE SHOW OR MOVIE?

Ancient Aliens. This show on the history channel explores ancient times in a non-critical, documentary format. Of course it features correlation to extraterrestrials, but the reason why I enjoy the show is because of how it highlights so much ancient architecture. Suspension bridges and skyscrapers are marvels of modern engineering, but some of the world's most impressive constructions are thousands of years behind us. It's fascinating!

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT'S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Seeing the end-to-end process of development projects going from an undeveloped plot of land to a fully developed and occupied housing community. Knowing that everything we do to get a community developed will eventually result in families buying a home is both inspiring and keeps me motivated.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I am looking forward to attending as many workshops and speaking events at IBS that I can to increase my base of knowledge. Specifically, I would like to learn how other home builders are adjusting to the current financial environment in which inflation is increasing construction costs and fiscal policy is impacting cost of capital.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active. Living in Seattle, I am lucky to be a quick drive from the Cascade Mountains, where you can find some of the best hiking in the U.S. Other than that, I love working out and rock climbing. When I'm indoors, I love watching sports and playing darts as part of a competitive league.

My favorite movie has to be Gladiator. I think I saw it four times when it was in theaters. As for TV shows, Mad Men is my favorite drama and Community is my favorite sitcom. (I'm still holding out hope for that Community movie!)

I enjoy learning about history and podcasts are great for that. The History of Byzantium hosted by Robin Pierson is a favorite of mine. As for the long form discussion podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend hosted by Conan O'Brien is the best, in my opinion. It has a healthy mix of serious discussion and comedy. Renovations Unlimited

Edward Buczkowski is the president of Renovations Unlimited, which he co-owns with his stepfather, who was in the carpentry field for 40 years. Edward is responsible for operations management & sales for Renovations Unlimited.

Being a hands-on person, Edward found a true passion for the remodeling industry at a young age. He is a fourth-generation craftsman, so remodeling is like home to him. Edward’s great grandfather started a cabinetry company that was passed down through the generations, but Edward wanted to work on an entire home rather than just a portion of it.

In 2014, Edward obtained his residential builders license and started a carpentry company for homeowners and became a sub-contractor for builders. In 2017, after learning that jobsites took great communication, follow through and processes to go smoothly, they started offering full-service general contracting to ensure their clients would have a great remodeling experience.

WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Working in a client’s home, a very personal place for all people, is an honor. To go through the remodeling process with our clients has been beyond rewarding. Making their dreams a reality and seeing the enjoyment they have upon project completion is an experience that I thoroughly love. The relationships you build after working with them for months, sometimes longer, turn them into more than just a client. They are an extension of family and continue to return for more projects through the years.

The most inspiring part of my job is to take someone’s vision and turning it into real, tangible construction documents. The process of design and creation is extremely appealing and it creates a bond between me and my clients.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

I would love to learn the latest design trends in the market as well as the latest solutions in construction detailing and waterproofing. There is always a new and better way to construct a home and I want to make sure my drawings utilize the best technology for my clients. Networking and making lifelong connections are also a challenge in our growing digital world, so I would love to make more connections at IBS.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

“You don’t know what you don’t know.” When I was given this quote I believe it was meant to slow me down, however I took it as a reminder to always keep learning. I don’t honestly love to read. When I am reading it is in my quiet time with the Lord, a devotion or preparing to teach a Bible study. In some form or fashion, my reading usually always revolved around God’s word. (Cheesy, I know, but true).

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I love working directly with our trade partners and highlighting their skills. Sometimes the process is really tough, especially when the details are limited and you only have a drawing or idea of what the client would like. But muddling through that process and showcasing a tradesperson’s technical abilities is the thing that makes me enjoy my job and have pride for what we are doing.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

Probably just making it through 5 days in Vegas, ha! I am NOT a city person, but I can appreciate them for what they are and what they have to offer. I have been to IBS before and it's definitely drinking from the firehose in a sense that there is so much information to take in and you can’t even begin to digest it all, but that is the coolest thing about these events.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

I have always liked, “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are for.” - John A. Shedd

Failure is a part of life and you have to be willing to take risks in order to grow and learn.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Anything outdoors! Skiing, mountain biking, dirt biking, and hiking are the top contenders, but I also love to cook/bake and read.

FAVORITE SHOW OR MOVIE?

Hard to pick just one, but any slapstick comedy such as Ace Ventura and the like.

FAVORITE PODCAST OR BOOK?

Oh gosh … I guess the podcast I have been listening to the longest would be “Stuff You Should Know” with Josh Clark and Charles “Chuck” W. Bryant. Every episode is very different and their dorky humor keeps me entertained.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Granite countertops are one of the last things to go into a home. As clients walk through the door many of them are just DONE. They have delt with the same ups and downs that everyone has during the building process. Subs not showing up. Things not happening how they see them on Pinterest. Costs rising. Things taking longer than they wanted them to. It's rewarding to take someone through our buying process and help them make the last major decision for their home a smooth, easy, simple one. I love getting follow-up emails and texts about how much they love the granite or quartz that we install. To me we help make a house a home and enhance the places that people gather.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

The past few years have been NUTS between supply issues, rising rates and home shortages. I'm excited to see what we can expect for the future. I am anxious to see the new up and coming products to help cope with these issues in the construction world. My job relies heavily on the trends of today, which are constantly changing so being ahead of that to help my clients keep an up-to-date design is very essential if I want to dominate my sector.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

"Be Curious not judgmental." - Walt Whitman

That quote I heard a few years back, but it was put into a very nice context in the tv series Ted Lasso. You will never understand what someone is going through. Judging comes very naturally to humans.......But being curious requires effort, humility, and selflessness. That mindset can take you places you never thought possible and help you meet and get to know some of the best people.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Being with my wife, Bow Hunting, fishing.

While working as a finish carpenter, Mikki put herself through school and earned a degree. Within six years, Mikki was a construction site superintendent for building high-end custom homes. In the fall of 2022, Mikki’s first home will be featured in the Central Washington Home Builders Association Tour of Homes.

SNAPSHOT Q&A
WHAT’S THE MOST INSPIRING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I love website design and I especially love seeing something I create help a small business grow. The business owners I’ve worked with have an incredible passion for what they do. With each new project I work on, I get to see what drives them and watch my work positively impact their passion. For example, I’ve worked with a linen rental business to move all of their orders online by creating a new website that is both beautiful and functional. It allowed their work to be simplified while also enabling them to reach a much wider client base, thus making the business to grow. Each small business begins with a dream, and I love being a part of something that helps that dream flourish.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU WANT TO TACKLE AT IBS?

This will be my second time attending IBS. While my first experience was fantastic, there was so much to take in that, at times, it was a little overwhelming. Now that I know the breadth of opportunities available, I feel like I will be able to better navigate the show. Since so many of our clients are in the building industry, I plan to participate in events that will help me to better understand their needs so that I can bring that information home and use it in my work on their behalf.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN OR A FAVORITE QUOTE?

“A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.” -John A. Shedd. I loved this quote even before we moved aboard our sailboat. It’s a reminder to break free from the binds of “safety.” Nothing amazing ever happened from staying stagnant. Take risks. Explore new places, ideas, hobbies, and skills. Keep learning, keep moving. Staying in harbor is safe, but ships decay at dock.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Because I live on the water, I’m always swimming, fishing, hanging out on deck with my dog, or jumping off our make-shift plank (which is most definitely not up to code). I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by nature or exploring a new destination.

FAVORITE SHOW OR MOVIE?

My husband and I binge watch shows like it’s a sport. Newer shows: Stranger Things and The Last Kingdom. Classics: Doctor Who, Stargate SG1 and Boston Legal.

FAVORITE PODCAST OR BOOK?

I’m currently reading through the Dune novels by Frank Herbert. Some may think I’m crazy but go watch the 2021 movie first, and then dive into the books. It sets the stage and makes the novels amazing!
